Uncommonly delighful!

Okay, maybe I've lived my life in a bubble. Maybe I don't get out as much as one would expect. And maybe I'm the last guy on Earth that's ever heard of this site. But if not, if you're just experiencing it now for the first time as I recently did, I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Big lead-in right? It is, after all, just an online catalog site. But would that have been as interesting to read? Check out the site, you'll be better for it. And if anyone wants to spring for one of those red vintage restored phones for me, e-mail me for the shipping address. ;) As always, click on the images for instant site access!

So how did you spend YOUR Sunday afternoon???

Michelle and I took my visiting niece and nephew to The Wildlife Safari. Had a great time and the kids really enjoyed themselves. We saw Elephants, Zebras, Giraffes, Lions, Tigers and Bears (Oh my!) It was alot of fun, and the weather was perfect. It brought back alot of memories of when I visited the park as a kid. I grew up just a couple of miles from the park. In fact, we had more than a few lost animals in our old neighborhood back in the day. Enjoy the photos below. Click on a photo for a larger view.

“Beam me up Scotty” for the last time...

James ‘Scotty’ Doohan dies at age 85 ‘Star Trek’ chief engineer forever known for beaming up Enterprise crew
The Associated Press
Updated: 11:02 a.m. ET July 21, 2005

LOS ANGELES - He made his name in Hollywood beaming his colleagues back to the safety of the Enterprise on “Star Trek.” Now, actor James Doohan’s family is hoping to beam him up to the “final frontier” that Doohan’s character “Scotty” loved so dearly.
The actor, who died Wednesday at age 85, had told relatives he wanted his ashes blasted into outer space, as was done for “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry.
“He’ll be there with his buddy, which is wonderful,” said Doohan’s agent and longtime friend, Steve Stevens.
Doohan died at his home in Redmond, Wash., with his wife of 31 years, Wende, at his side. He had retired from public events last year, not long after announcing he had Alzheimer’s disease.
Houston-based Space Services Inc., which specializes in space memorials, plans to send a few grams of Doohan’s ashes aboard a rocket later this year. Remains are sealed in an aluminum capsule that stays in orbit up to several hundred years before falling and vaporizing in the Earth’s atmosphere, the company has said.
It should be a fitting finale for an actor who, as the Starship Enterprise’s frazzled chief engineer saved the Enterprise almost every week from blowing up, burning up or being overrun by renegade aliens when the warp drive, the phasers, the shields, the power cells or some other futuristic collection of doohickies failed.
As the man who commanded the Enterprise’s particle beam transporter, Doohan’s character also inspired the phrase, “Beam me up, Scotty.” Capt. Kirk and other members of the Enterprise crew never really issued the order quite that way, however, until the fourth “Star Trek” film when Kirk said, “Scotty, beam me up.”
A master of dialects from his early years in radio, the Canadian-born Doohan experimented with seven different accents for the hard-pressed engineer.
“The producers asked me which one I preferred,” Doohan recalled 30 years later. “I believed the Scot voice was the most commanding. So I told them, ‘If this character is going to be an engineer, you’d better make him a Scotsman.”’
Doohan was born March 3, 1920, in Vancouver, British Columbia, the youngest of four children of William Doohan, a pharmacist, veterinarian and dentist, and his wife, Sarah. He wrote in his autobiography, “Beam Me Up, Scotty,” that his father was a drunk who made life miserable for his wife and children.
At 19, he escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, where he became a lieutenant in the artillery and was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day.
After the war, Doohan enrolled in a drama class in Toronto on a whim. He showed promise and won a two-year scholarship to New York’s famed Neighborhood Playhouse, where fellow students included Leslie Nielsen, Tony Randall and Richard Boone.
His commanding presence and booming voice brought him steady work as a character actor in films and television in Canada and the United States. Then came “Star Trek” and fans forever screaming “Beam me up, Scotty.”
“Good gracious, it’s been said to me for just about 31 years,” he said in an 1998 interview. “It’s been said to me at 70 miles an hour across four lanes on the freeway. I hear it from just about everybody. It’s been fun.”
Married three times, Doohan was the father of nine children.
“A long and storied career is over,” William Shatner, who played Kirk, said Wednesday.

LEAVE YOUR MARK!

I'm getting alot of hits on this blog site. More than I'd ever imagined actually. Even one in Tokyo yesterday, that was cool! I've gone international, I love it! I've decided to post this little tidbit of knowledge, because I've noticed that despite the traffic, I'm not getting alot of comments. Yes Jeope, I do get yours, you're the saving grace! :) My idea is that, by posting this, I can create a place where visitors can leave their mark. Comment this thread as if it were a guestbook. Just say hi, or say hi and let me know what you think of the blog so far. I'd appreciate the feedback.

Thanks folks!

Speaking of the Fantastic Four...

We watched the new movie Sunday afternoon, and were for the most part very impressed. no one's going to win an Academy Award for their performance here, but we didn't go into it expecting as much. It was decent popcorn munching escapist fare. And I, for one, was just happy it wasn't another Hulk, or Punisher fiasco. ;)

Incidentally, came across this the other day, it's an online readable version of the very first Fantastic Four comic. Click on the image to be directed to the site, check it out. There are links to a number of other classic Marvel comics there as well, very cool!

Graffiti Weekend '05

This weekend was Graffiti Weekend in Roseburg. Classic cars were in full effect, as there was a show and shine, antique car show and evening cruise along the main drag in downtown. People come out of the woodwork for this event each year. The streets were packed! Lots of food booths and live music. I have a special affinity for classic cars, my first car was a Jet black '55 Chevy BelAir. Beautiful car, it was alot of work, but I wish I still had it! Michelle and I spent 2-3 hours downtown curbside, taking tons of photos of the cars. Here are a few for you to enjoy!

Fantastic Four Wallpaper

With the movie's release just around the corner, I thought I'd share my FF wallpaper with the two people who frequent my blog. ;) This wallpaper isn't available on the official site, www.FantasticFourMovie.com, it's better, in my opinion, than what they're offering. It's a screen capture from the site itself, retouched a bit. Click on the image below to see a larger version, right click larger image and save as background. Enjoy!

Bandon by the Sea

Michelle and I took a day trip to Bandon Saturday. It was absolutely beautiful. We spent hours walking along the beach and cliffs overlooking the beach, taking lots of pictures. Then, we wandered into town where they had an Independence Day Celebration going on. We checked out a Corvette car show, walked along the boardwalk and enjoyed some fish and chips, and then browsed through the gift shops and candy stores in the Old Town. We ended the trip with a visit to the Coquille River Lighthouse at Bullards Beach State Park two miles North of town. All in all, a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon, we had a great time! Check out a few of the photographs we took below.
